From Headlines to Helping Hands

A year ago I found myself in front of an audience at AD:VENTURE’s launch event in Huddersfield, sharing insights on public relations and content strategy.

Shifting from journalism and West Yorkshire Police communications to running my own business happened naturally. Driven by word of mouth and the right opportunities coming along at the right time – but I didn’t anticipate how challenging the journey would be.

Yet, by pushing through tough moments, gaining confidence in leading workshops, celebrating clients’ accomplishments, and contributing to community initiatives, the journey has been incredibly worthwhile.

This week Katie Walden Illustration beautifully captured an online AD:VENTURE workshop I delivered, reminding me of the joy of sharing knowledge and helping others grow.

Start Small, Scale Up, and Keep it Real

It’s easy to feel pressured to have a perfect strategy from day one, but true growth happens step by step.

It’s not about having everything figured out. It’s about building momentum gradually.

Start with manageable goals like one blog post or social media update a week, and refine your approach as you see results.

Consistency is key, even if progress feels slow at times.

Telling Stories That Matter

Every business achievement has a backstory worth sharing.

It’s not just about the result but the dedication, challenges, and breakthroughs along the way.

I’ve had the opportunity to support local events and initiatives, from Kirklees and Calderdale Charity Lunch (KACCL) to conferences and partnerships. These experiences have enriched my network and shown me the impact of giving back.

Whether it’s writing a press release that gets published, attending an event, or supporting a cause that aligns with your values, find small ways to contribute.

Because the connections you build and the fulfilment you gain shape your professional path in unexpected ways.

From Crisis Comms to Proactive PR

Crisis communications taught me to be prepared, but there’s a different skill set in using public relations to proactively shape perceptions.

It’s about finding the stories worth sharing, helping clients to work through the challenges, and spotting opportunities for growth.

Public relations isn’t just about responding to situations, it’s about creating them.

It’s a Two Way Street

Business growth isn’t a solo endeavour. Building a network where people lift each other makes all the difference.

Share your knowledge, celebrate successes together, and be there for each other during tough times.

If you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help. And if you’re thriving, offer support to others.

It’s the relationships you nurture that often become your greatest asset, bringing mutual growth and resilience.

Lessons from the Journey

Building a business has been a blend of hard work, self doubt, and plenty of learning.

If you’re finding your own journey challenging, remember that it’s okay not to have all the answers.

Start small, stay consistent, celebrate every win, and keep learning.

If you need support with public relations, content strategy, or sharing your story, I’m here to help you find your voice and make an impact.
