The Story Behind the Stories

Sophie Seddon PR supported and attended the premiere of Sam Teale Productions 2024 Christmas advert, 'The Last Gift', accompanied by singer-songwriter Jenna Bay's 'Our Song'

The stories you see in the headlines are only half the tale. The real work happens behind the scenes, on tight deadlines, through unexpected challenges, and often a fair bit of juggling.

This week, Sophie Seddon PR has been deep in the storytelling trenches.

From celebrating award winners to supporting community initiatives, and launching a charity Christmas advert, it’s been non-stop.

Here’s a peek behind the curtain at what it takes to turn those stories into headlines.

The headline: Colourcube Automotive Shines with Business Service Excellence Award

The story behind the story?

Coordinating with journalists, securing the right quotes, media outreach, and monitoring coverage.

The goal is to share the hard work of others behind a business’s success with a wider audience.

Seeing Colourcube’s story celebrated across media outlets, including the Yorkshire Post and Huddersfield Hub, is a reward in itself.

The headline: Sam Teale Productions Premieres 2024 Christmas Advert ‘The Last Gift’

The story behind the story?

Technical checks, last-minute adjustments, and a packed crowd at The John Smith’s Stadium.

Coordinating press coverage under a tight turnaround brought flashbacks to my days in West Yorkshire Police comms—where accuracy and speed were non-negotiable.

The result? A heartwarming, emotional advert supported by Cleckheaton singer-songwriter Jenna Bay’s original track, ‘Our Song’.

The project supports Gingerbread, the UK’s largest single-parent charity.

A powerful story sticks long after the credits roll.

You can watch the ad on YouTube and Facebook and donate to Gingerbread here.

You can read the story in the Yorkshire PostHalifax Courier and Huddersfield Hub.

Next Up – KACCL Launch

Next week marks the launch of the Kirklees and Calderdale Christmas Lunch (KACCL), raising funds for Fresh Futures and Project Youth Cancer.

The story behind the story?

It’s been all hands on deck, refining messaging and ensuring every detail supports the bigger picture.

Community-driven initiatives are at the core of meaningful public relations.

I’m especially looking forward to hearing the Orange Box Choir and connecting with the people behind this incredible cause.

The Bigger Picture – Finding the Story Behind the Story

Last-minute changes and juggling competing deadlines took me back to my journalism and fast-paced, blue-light comms days.

It reminded me how important clarity, accuracy and adaptability are in storytelling – even when things get chaotic – to ensure the message is clear and the story gets told.

Public relations is about finding the story behind the story and sharing it in a way that connects.

This week reminded me exactly why I do what I do. Blending journalism, copywriting, and PR to bring stories to life, whether it’s a business success, a community cause, or a Christmas charity advert.
