Picture this: a wannabe journalist, armed with ambition and a sprinkle of naivete, boldly fires off an email to the editor of a local newspaper, pleading for a job. But there’s a catch-22 alert: no experience, no job; no job, no experience. Sound familiar?
Cue, a Door Opens
Under the wing of a small, friendly team that felt more like family than colleagues, I stepped headfirst into journalism training on the back of that letter. They championed my development through the rigorous National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) program, providing abundant opportunities to hone my skills and meet their exacting standards.
After previously completing a BA Honours Degree in Leeds and a whirlwind adventure of backpacking with nothing but the clothes on my back, the sandy shores and coconut-filled days were soon replaced by the familiarity of student digs – this time with a journalism course in Sheffield. Gone were the beach vibes. Hello to the aroma of beans on toast wafting through drafty doors.
Being the trainee journalist sent down the ancient staircase to collect nibs (news in brief) was like embarking on a quest to the depths of Mordor. For any Lord of the Rings fans, you know what I mean. Trust me, it was a mission worthy of Frodo himself.
But hey, there were always silver linings with my newfound work family. The perks of being in such a small team meant I got my time covering everything from quirky births to spine-chilling deaths. Their unwavering support and a nomination for the Yorkshire Reporter of the Year award? Let’s just say it was the confidence boost I needed to kick open some new doors.
Poacher Turned Game Keeper
A secondment at a sister daily paper, and a stint rubbing shoulders with TV bigwigs in Manchester, had me feeling like the star of my own show. I was in my 20s, filled with possibility, and eyeing a TV career when another door slid open.
A job in police communications was a role teeming with excitement and responsibility, each day presenting new challenges and demands.
I went from collecting nibs (I left journalism under the euphemism ‘black widow’ due to countless death knocks in my last few weeks) to managing the media during serious incidents as a police communications officer. It felt like trading my hobbit feet for tactical boots and exchanging my ring quest for managing press conferences.
That was until fate hurled the ultimate curveball my way. IVF treatment took me through a door of uncertainty, transforming me into a hormonal pin cushion in pursuit of a dream. Yet, through the chaos and countless injections, two precious miracles emerged – our two little girls. In an instant they became my world, eclipsing any breaking news.
Leap of Faith
Suddenly, my priorities shifted faster than a speeding bullet. Armed with nothing but instinct and a sprinkle of faith, I bid adieu to the police force and slid through a door into the unknown.
But fate had its own design for me. An unexpected door to new possibilities swung open on a ballet run. Who knew that a simple coffee date in a supermarket café would change everything? Faster than I could close a door, I was swept into freelancing work. My desk? Tucked inside a sliding wardrobe door.
Sliding Doors Opened Wide
Networking events, collaborative opportunities, the support of local businesses, and sheer determination opened the door to Sophie Seddon PR.
Each twist and turn, each sliding door moment, fuels my ambition like never before. But let’s be real. Setting up your own business is not always an easy door to keep open. Sometimes, it gets jammed tighter than a jar of pickles.
Behind Closed Doors
With self-belief and the support of loved ones, anything is possible.
So, to anyone feeling trapped behind closed doors, trust your instincts, take chances, and never underestimate the power of those sliding doors. After all, life’s greatest adventures often begin when an unexpected door slides open.
