Creativity, Clients and Celebrations

30 August 2024

This month I have noticed the stories I write for clients unfolding in my life.

August brought two special birthdays – our daughters, Ellie and Gracie – each with unique requests that stretched my creativity beyond the office.

Ellie wanted a classic chocolate cake with a modern twist, while Gracie asked for a strawberry cat cake – something entirely new for me.

Just like in my professional life, these requests were opportunities to combine creativity with love, personalisation, and the goal of creating something memorable.

Turning Vision into Words

On the professional front, I had the privilege of developing copy for a web builder with an artist’s flair. This project offered an opportunity to work closely with a talented graphic designer and illustrator.

The challenge was not just to communicate their vision, but to do so in a way that speaks directly to their target audience – capturing the essence of their creativity while ensuring the message is clear, precise and compelling.

Just as I had to balance Ellie’s love for chocolate and Gracie’s love for cats and strawberries (at least she didn’t request a pasta cake), I needed to find the right words to reflect the unique style and strengths of this creative team.

It’s a process that requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to explore new approaches. Skills that I bring to every project.

Building Brands with Buttercrumble

Attending an online branding workshop with Buttercrumble was another recipe for success. The workshop, organised through AD:VENTURE was a great opportunity to refine my approach to brand narratives, ensuring that every word I write aligns with the visual and emotional elements of a brand’s identity.

Like baking a cake, building a brand involves balancing ingredients, carefully measured and thoughtfully combined.

For Ellie’s classic chocolate cake, I stuck with the tried and tested basics, much like a well established brand that knows its identity and audience.

Gracie’s strawberry cat cake request, however, pushed me out of my comfort zone, much like a new brand looking to stand out.

The end result needed to be something that delighted my ‘audiences’.

Buttercrumble’s workshop reinforced the idea that successful branding, much like baking, requires creativity, precision, and a deep understanding of your audience’s tastes to create an emotional connection.

Just as I mixed and matched ingredients to create the perfect cake for my daughters, I blend words and ideas to create compelling brand stories.

Fine Tuning for Success

This week, I have been fine-tuning copy for an award submission. There’s a deep satisfaction in taking copy and polishing it until it shines, knowing the right words can make all the difference in how a submission is received.

It’s a meticulous approach, but finding the perfect phrase or the most impactful way to present an idea is always worth the effort.

Back to School, Back to Basics

As my daughters prepare to start high school – one beginning her journey and the other nearing the end – I’m reminded of the importance of fundamentals.

Just as they will be revisiting the basics of their studies, I’m constantly reviewing the fundamentals for effective communication.

Whether writing copy for a website, creating a brand story, preparing for an award submission or creating workshops and training, the basics are always at the heart of my work – clarity, creativity, and a deep understanding of your audience.

What Has This Month Taught Me?

The best work, whether in baking or writing copy, comes from a place of personal connection and passion.

For me, work is not just about delivering words on a page, it’s about telling stories that matter. Stories that reflect the uniqueness of each client, just as each cake reflected the unique tastes of my daughters.

Whether you’re looking to build your brand, connect with your audience, or simply find the right words to express your vision, I’m here to help, bringing creativity, experience, and a personal touch to every project.
